Andy had a great idea a few weeks ago. Actually that’s not the interesting thing. Andy has great ideas at the rate of dozens per day. What’s interesting is that this was a great idea that was actually easily doable. Andy’s a Big Thinker. So usually his ideas run along the ideas of: “Let’s roast a whole ox and invite all our friends around”, or “Wouldn’t it be neat if we started a winery.”
So Andy’s doable idea was for me to pick just one of our vines and take its portrait every week from first bud to harvest. It’s only been a few weeks and already the project is fascinating.
For your edification, I submit Vine Two of Row Six of the Upper Vineyard (mostly Cabernet).
Here is our featured vine back on the 4th of April when buds and leaves were just starting:
By April 19th, growth had significantly sped up.
Now by May 4th, even with unseasonably cold and rainy weather, look at the growth.
Next month, I think we’ll be amazed at the progress. Watch this space.
In the meantime, here’s a link to the whole set on Flickr.
This will be fun to see since we can’t be there in person. Send us a bottle of the finished goods!
that is amazing (not just the buds, but the rows of vines). I can’t imagine how rewarding that is to look at!!
nice! thanks to Andy and his great idea 😀
Those are the tiny grapes in the last photo?
Andrew,
I’m calling them grapelets. Andy is insisting they are flower buds that will then turn into fruit. Which shows how shockingly little each of us knows about farming and grapes. But I supposed if we’d known what there was to know about starting a vineyard, we never would have done it. There’s something to be said for ignorance.
Anyway, this photo project will be as educational for us as for any random viewer who surfs by.
What a neat project. I hope to see more pics of the vine in the future!
